Two Delicious Winter Recipes from Jane-Anne Hobbs, Author of Scrumptious

Scrumptious Food for Family and FriendsJane-Anne Hobbs, food blogger and author of Scrumptious: Food For Family and Friends, has shared a series of delicious winter recipes on Getaway, including recipes for Lightly Spiced South African Guava Ice Cream and Braaied Mealie and Chicken Soup:

Lightly Spiced South African Guava Ice Cream

1½ cups (375 ml) water
1 cup (250 ml) white granulated sugar
one whole star anise
one 4-cm quill of cinnamon
one thumb-sized strip of fresh lemon zest, white pith removed
8 ripe guavas
2 tsp (10 ml) freshly squeezed lemon juice
75 ml cream or plain white yoghurt

Braaied Mielie and Chicken Soup

For the chicken stock:
a large free-range chicken, trimmed of excess fat
2½ litres water
1 cup (250 ml) white wine
1½ tsp (7.5 ml) sea salt
2 large onions, peeled and quartered
2 carrots, peeled and roughly sliced
a thin slice of lemon, peel on
2 bay leaves
1 tsp (5 ml) freshly ground black pepper
a large stalk of celery
6 stalks of fresh parsley
3 sprigs of fresh thyme
