A Sumptuous Launch for Jane-Anne Hobbs’ Scrumptious Food for Family and Friends

 
The launch of Jane-Anne Hobbs’ new recipe book, Scrumptious Food for Family and Friends, was a hearty affair with many fine friends, family and food writers, bloggers and tweeters in attendance.

The South African food and wine guru and television cook, Michael Olivier, introduced the book, heaping the author and the book’s production team with praise.

He particularly liked the advice at the beginning of Scrumptious, suggesting that it is wisdom that parents should pass on to their children: “In life and cooking, follow your heart, prepare ahead, be careful about measurements and while yet staying calm, pay attention to the details.”

Olivier said, “Jane-Anne Hobbs is no ordinary cook and no ordinary woman. She is a superb practitioner who knows that food fills the soul”. He expressed his sheer delight at being asked to bask in the warmth of her light. “You’ve taken this so seriously, taken it so much to heart. Everyone of us food writers here now wish we’d done it but it didn’t have the oomph!”

Hobbs commented on the status quo of online food bloggers, of whom many possess considerable talent and ability, but struggle to gain access to opportunities in South African print media. “This frustrates me,” she said. “There are some bloggers who have a digital audience that exceeds that of certain niche publications in this country.”

However, she expressed her belief that this attitude is changing, observing that, “the better bloggers are establishing themselves as credible voices in the food-writing world”. Some three other food bloggers’ first books will be published this year, with more to come next year.
