Jurassic World – What is Fact and What is Fiction? Paleontologist Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan Explains

Famous Dinosaurs of AfricaAnusuya Chinsamy-Turan, South African vertebrate paleontologist and author of Famous Dinosaurs of Africa, has written an op-ed for Daily Maverick in which she separates fact from fiction in the Hollywood blockbuster Jurassic World.

“Like any good science fiction story, there are embedded elements of scientific fact in Jurassic World,” Chinsamy-Turan writes. She highlights the hits and misses in the movie and concludes with a sincere wish: “It is my earnest hope that, despite the embellishments, Jurassic World – like the original Jurassic Park – will inspire a new generation of paleontologists and dinosaur enthusiasts.”

Read her article and be schooled by a real paleontologist:

‘Nothing in Jurassic World is natural!’ proclaims Henry Wu, the chief scientist in Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World. And to complicate matters even further, he explains how even the DNA used to ‘create’ the animals is not authentic dinosaur DNA: gaps in the ancient genome have been filled with that of different living animals. In a movie such as this the public is often left wondering what is fact and what is fiction. Allow me to unravel some of this confusion.

Gemaklik in jou eie lyfComfortable in Your Own SkinLeandie du Randt kraai koning(in) op Afrikaanse skerms.

“Kyk, moenie Little Miss Sunshine op haar blonde spiraalkrulle takseer nie. Leandie is swaargewig, al weeg sy soveel soos drie Mariebeskuitjies,” skryf Retief.

Du Randt se jongste fliek – Hollywood in my huis – begin more landwyd in teaters draai.

Howzit!

En moenie my ien-sult nie!”

Leandie dra vandag ’n vintage-rokkie.

How to Spot the Modus Operandi and Psyche of a Bully – Gail Dore Explains (Video)

Bully-proofGail Dore, author of Bully-proof, was recently interviewed by Samm Marshall on Morning Live about her book.

In the interview, Marshall asks Dore about what is needed to create a bully-proof environment.

“That is a big question,” the author says. In short, according to Dore, bullying needs to be recognised for what it is and the environment needs to be completely intolerant of it. She goes on to explain the modus operandi and psyche of a bully.
